The shortlist has been announced for IJGlobal's 2023 ESG Awards, following a record number of submissions.
IJGlobal prides itself on the peer review nature of all the awards we host and this year the judging panel was of the highest calibre, giving an international focus to developments from across the international infrastructure and energy markets.
View the full shortlist from the Company Awards below.
The global awards will showcase winners for best-in-class ESG credentials for specific projects and general environmental and sustainability policies.
We are seeking to identify the organisations, transactions and individuals that have truly turned the dial on the environmental, social and governance front. They will reflect market developments in the last financial year – from 1 April 2022 to 31 March 2023.
We have a wide range of categories available for entry recognising the companies, transactions and individuals who are making the greatest ESG impact. The shortlists and winners are published on our website and social media.
Submission evidence
As with all our awards, we have pulled together an international judging committee – all of them established professionals in the infra/energy world – to review submissions. We will identify the judging panel in the coming weeks. Needless to say, judges who have an interest in a transaction or who have a particularly close working relationship with companies that are being judged (or indeed work at the company), will be recused from voting on those submissions to ensure a fair and transparent process. This will be policed by IJGlobal in the run-up to the judging session and on the day when the judging team will ensure an honest and fair process. At IJGlobal, we pride ourselves on hosting what we believe to be the most transparent, peer-review awards in this sector.

Mark Henderson - Chief Investment Officer, Gridserveisk
► Sometimes you have to bite the bullet on some judges – and this was very much the case for Mark when at Judgement Day for the 2020 awards, he threw in his tuppence worth for every single submission that did not have an ESG component.
This disruptive contribution (especially in the energy space) ensured he would never be invited back to judge the IJGlobal (greenfield) awards, but won him a place on future ESG panels! Mark is a long-established investment banker and asset manager with more than 30 years’ experience having advised on, structured and financed in excess of £5 billion and 8,000MW of infrastructure energy projects in that time.
Paula-Ann Novotny - Senior Associate, Webber Wentzel
► Yet another judge who came to IJ’s attention through winning an award at a previous event, Johannesburg-based Paula-Ann picked up the trophy for her law firm – Webber Wentzel – for having won ESG legal adviser for emerging markets at last year’s ceremony.
As one of the judges said of the firm: “Webber Wentzel deserves recognition as a law firm that is attempting to do more than just act for clients in the ESG space. It demonstrates excellent diversification." Talking to Paula-Ann on the night confirmed our belief that Paula-Ann was “our kind of people” and would be an excellent addition to the judging panel. .
Jemima Atkins - Investment Team Member, Pioneer Point Partners
► Jemima Atkins is an investment professional at Pioneer Point Partners, based in London, where she makes investments in European infrastructure assets in the energy transition and environment sectors. Pioneer only invests in sustainable infrastructure and targets investments that contribute to net-zero greenhouse gas emissions and circular economy.
Jemima joined Pioneer in 2022, and previously held investment roles at Allianz Capital Partners in the infrastructure equity team and Allianz Global Investors in the infrastructure debt investment team. At Allianz, Jemima worked across private markets asset classes to promote sustainability improvements and the transition of infrastructure assets to net-zero. She holds a BSc Natural Sciences from Durham University where she specialised in biodiversity and conservation biology.
Gwen Colin - ESG Director, Partner, Vauban Infrastructure Partners
► Gwen Colin is Vauban IP's ESG Director and is in charge of overseeing the ESG methodology evolution and its alignment with Vauban IP's long term strategy. She was previously a consultant for PE and infrastructure funds looking to develop sustainable projects in Europe and Asia.
Gwen started her career as a legal advisor, then project manager, at Credit Agricole Asset Management (now Amundi) in Paris and Luxembourg.
Her involvement in sustainable finance started in 2008, where she led the product innovation and supported the distribution of a Socially Responsible Investments offering targeting Middle Eastern and South East Asian sovereign entities, institutional clients, private banks, and family offices.
Rachel Fleming - VP Infrastructure Debt, BlackRock
► Rachel first came to IJGlobal’s attention when she was nominated for the IJGlobal ESG Awards Rising Star category and won in the Investor category.
Rachel proved to be a great help on the advisory panel that was set up to investigate how we could improve the criteria and methodology of the awards process.
An Australian national, Rachel relocated to the UK from Australia in spring 2019 having cut her teeth in the power and energy sector in Melbourne at NAB, joining the bank in its early 2012 graduate intake.
Straight out of the trap, Rachel focused on renewable energy transactions as well as more challenging elements of the job, winning her the Altitude Award for leading the overhaul of NAB’s credit rating tool for project finance borrowers. After joining IFM in Melbourne in late 2017, Rachel led the greenfield financing of an energy-from-waste plant in Western Australia.
Amy Cleaves - Senior Associate, Hogan Lovells
► Amy came to IJ’s attention through winning a rising star award – this one the IJGlobal ESG Rising Star 2021 in the advisory category. This award was created on Judgment Day when the judges were so impressed by Amy and Rachel Fleming that they decided to grant 2 rising star trophies and celebrate the roles both have played.
At the time of winning the award, Amy was an associate. She is now a senior associate at Hogan Lovells, the firm she has stuck with since starting her career in law. Amy’s work focuses on advising on renewable energy projects, ESG policies, social inclusion funds, corporate governance arrangements, and how the global energy transition will affect companies. It was this sector focus combined with a passion for environmental, social and governance issues that won over the IJGlobal independent panel of judges who opted.
Dr. Patricia Rodrigues Jenner - Investment committee member, GLIL Infrastructure
► Looking back over the IJGlobal archive and Patricia crops up quite a few times. One of the key appearances in these pages was when we announced her appointment to the UK’s Green Investment Bank back in 2011.
Since then, she was one of the first judges to sign up as a judge on the inaugural IJGlobal ESG Awards that met virtually last year (2021) – nominated by a number of industry experts.
Patricia is a real assets investment professional and non-executive board director with a breadth of experience across infrastructure, real assets and private equity. Over the past 2 decades, Patricia has been an investment manager at Macquarie, multi-manager at Townsend and LP at the UK Government and PSP, leveraging her cross-sector perspectives to carve a unique path.
Arash Mojabi - Director and UK sustainable finance lead, ING Bank
► Arash is the UK Lead of Sustainable Finance at ING driving the deployment of sustainable financing solutions across all sectors, proactively engaging with clients on their sustainability and transition strategies. He also has over 10 years of infrastructure experience working across financing, consulting and advisory. He is currently Chair of the International Project Finance Association’s Future Leaders Network and was named ESG Rising Star at IJGlobal’s 2022 ESG awards.
Arash holds an MSc in Infrastructure Investment & Finance from University College London and a BSc in Mathematics with Management and Finance from King’s College London.
Anne Foster - Global Head of Sustainable Investment, Quinbrook
► Winner of the first Outstanding Contribution Award at the inaugural IJGlobal ESG Awards, Anne is steeped in ESG lore and is an established member of the judging committee.
Anne works day-to-day directly with portfolio companies to drive change – from designing strategies that can provide beneficial impact on vulnerable communities, water stress, to actively forcing change in supply chains, driving suppliers to reassess their transparency and activities. Her commitment to social impact, assessment and strategy was selected by the KPMG Human Rights team to be showcased in a human rights report.
Kailash Vaswani – President of Corporate Finance, ReNew Power
► As president for corporate finance at ReNew Power in India, Kailash has worked in financial markets since 2001 and started his career as a research analyst at CRISIL which is owned by S&P and is India’s leading ratings provider. Kailash then moved to Morgan Stanley to assume a fixed income research role, covering the US and European bond markets. He has worked at Aditya Birla Group and Saffron Asset Advisors in various corporate finance and investment roles and helped them with investment decisions that amount to more than $6.5 billion in India and the US.
Carlos Barrera – Chief Executive Officer, Atlas Renewable Energy
► Given this previous success and ongoing commitment to ESG, Carlos (Ucho) Barrera makes for a good addition to the judging panel for this year’s awards. He is chief executive of Atlas – a leading renewable energy company with operations in the Americas, one of the largest solar IPPs in the region – which started operations in early 2017 after a successful MBO backed by Actis. Since then, it has grown to nearly 3.5GW of contracted projects, and to an enterprise value exceeding $3 billion. After a successful acquisition in 2022, Atlas is now backed by Global Infrastructure Partners (GIP).
Ruairi Revell – Head of Sustainability for core Infrastructure, abrdn
► As head of sustainability at abrdn – or abrdn Core Infrastructure as it (understandably) prefers to be called – Ruairi is part of the infrastructure equity team that invests across diversified UK and European small-mid market infrastructure. He works with the investment team to assess ESG risks and promote sustainability outcomes throughout the investment lifecycle and ensures compliance with the acronym-soup of disclosure requirements that now apply. Prior to his current role, Ruairi was head of ESG for core plus and value-add real estate at abrdn.
Simon Currie - Developer, Energy Estate
► A regular on the ESG judging panel, Simon is something of a shoo-in for these awards given his established credentials – having been on board in this space long before the career re-brands.
He has been on IJ’s radar since the early 2000s when he was at Norton Rose (now Norton Rose Fulbright) at which time he stood out as a renewable energy pioneer in a very un-lawyer-like manner. Simon – a New Zealander by birth – relocated from London to Australia with NRF to assume the role of global head of energy from its Sydney office.
Khasan Khasanov - Consultant to the IFC, PPP
► Uzbekistan-based Khasan is experienced economist with around 20 years of professional experience in public and project management, investments, project finance and PPPs.
In October 2021 he joined the PPP Development Agency (PPPDA) as a deputy head of department and in June 2022 he was promoted to deputy director of this agency. Prior joining the PPPDA, Khasan worked at Uzbekhydroenergy JSC as a division head for cooperation with IFIs. He has experience working with ADB, EBRD, AFD, IsDB, World Bank and IFC.
Clarissa Drysdale-Anderson - Partner ESG transaction and advisory, ERM
► Having picked up a trophy at IJInvestor Awards 2022 for specialist technical advisory, it seemed only appropriate to invite one of the team to join the judging panel for this year's ESG awards. The award ERM won was created by the independent panel at Judgment Day (a key part of the judges' remit) to recognise the role it plays in advising on emerging technologies. From discussions with ERM, Clarissa – a partner in the London M&A team – was identified as the ideal person to join the ESG panel.
